The Monongahela Forest
One third of the Monongahela National Forest is located within Pocahontas County. This vast wilderness provides the backdrop for countless recreational activities including camping, hiking, mountain biking, fishing or just watching wildlife in its natural habitat. With many developed campgrounds as well as the option to pick your own spot, it's no wonder that thousands of people per year come to spend the days exploring and the evenings gazing at the stars in this serene setting. Winter transforms the forest into a magical and tranquil place to enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoing on freshly fallen snow.
 As well as forests and hiking trails, the Monongahela National Forest is home to the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area; a protected wetlands area created by the United States Forest Service in 1965 to preserve the habitat of over 60 unique plant species. A wooden boardwalk makes it possible to enjoy the beauty of the area without affecting the delicate ecosystem of plants, animals and insects.
Vibrantly flowing within the Mon (as the locals call it) Forest are the three breathtaking Hill's Creek Waterfalls. Ranging from 25 feet to an amazing 63 feet drop it is a favorite destination for photographers and water lovers.
Stretching 43 miles from Richmond to 7 miles north of Marlinton, The Highland Scenic Highway is one of the most awe inspiring stretches of road in America. It is the highest elevated highway in the State of West Virginia, rising from 2300 feet to over 4500 feet and showcasing a bird's eye view of the Monongahela Forest.
State Parks and Forests
 Named for the tribe of Iroquois who inhabited the region in the mid 1700's, The Seneca State Forest is a camper's paradise. The Forest offers 11,000 acres of forest land bordering the Greenbrier River and is home to the famous Greenbrier River Trail. Fishing is a popular activity as the river is home to both small-mouth bass and rock-bass and the lake contains large-mouth bass and bluegill. For a one of a kind experience groups or families can stay in one of the rustic log cabins equipped with wood burning stoves, gas lamps and no running water or electricity built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's.
Watoga State Park At over 10,000 acres of woodland it is one of the largest state parks in West Virginia. With modern cabins, standard cabins, and tons of camping it is the destination of choice for many outdoor enthusiusts. Spend a quiet summer day paddle-boating, row-boating or fishing on the 11-acre lake, or relax and enjoy a tasty meal in the restaurant on the lake.
Beartown State Park This 107 acre park known for its unusual rock formations, giant boulders, and dark caves is considered to be the perfect backdrop for black bears to build a community. Developed in the 1970's, the wooden boardwak allows access through the park to explore this fascintaing natural landscape.

Conduct a thorough check for any safety hazards when you are getting your house ready to put on the market. You may be accustomed to the worn tread on the stairs, toys in the hallway, or closets that deposit their contents at your feet when the door is opened, but strangers won't be as intuitive as you are. They will be vulnerable to those little "hazards" as they walk through your home, turning on the faucets, opening closet doors, and going up and down the stairs.
The stairs are a good place to begin your safety check. Could someone tall accidentally bang their head on a beam, pipe or the ceiling as they go up or down? Is the carpeting on the stairs securely fastened? An area rug should have a non-slip mat underneath.
Safety is important because someone who is injured in your home could sue you for damages. This doesn't happen often, but if it does, it can be extremely unpleasant. "Better safe than sorry" applies to homes as well--especially when they are for sale and open to visits from potential buyers.
