 Pocahontas County Fast Facts

Pocahontas County is an area of 941 square miles of unrivaled beauty located in the mideast of West Virginia.

Pocahontas county boasts many other natural wonders including the headwaters of eight rivers and Hills Creek Falls.

The county is surrounded by the scenic Monongahela National Forest and nested in the Allegheny mountains including Bald Knob, the second highest point in the state of West Virginia.
With five State Parks and two State Forests, over 62% of the county totaling 349,000 acres is public land, more than any other county in the state.

Pocahontas County was established in December 1821 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly.

The county seat for Pocahontas County is Marlinton.

Weather and Tourism

Pocahontas County enjoys four well defined seasons. Typical of this mountain region, the spring wildflowers tend to arrive a bit later and the leaves in fall tend to turn a bit earlier with peak colors appearing between the last week of September and the first week of October. Summer evenings can be chilly, providing a gentle relief from the sunny mid 80's daytime highs. Winter is when Pocahontas County truly becomes a  wonderland with up to 200 inches of snow on Snowshoe mountain creating a backdrop for many winter activities.

Tourism plays a large part in the county's economy with one of every four jobs relating to the tourism industry and more than one million tourists visiting the county every year. One of the county's most popular destinations is The Green Bank Telescope, a 17 million pound fully steering telescope that allows scientists to study our solar system as well as distant galaxies far away.

Shopping and Dining

If you love browsing through antique shops and the thrill of flea market finds, you won't be dissapointed! Pocahontas County's country stores and flea markets will keep you busy for hours. When you visit one of the two Rail & Trail Stores you can enjoy a hand dipped ice cream while you shop. There are plenty of handicraft, sporting and camping equipment stores to suit your needs as well. The Ski Barn has everything you need to suit up for winter (and summer ) outdoor fun!

From fast food to fine dining, Pocahontas county has it all. In the mood for some chicken fried steak or a classic hamburger? You can check out one of the local family dining retaurants like The Hermitage which has been serving the area since 1965 and is famous for their delicious Boston cream pie. For fancier fare or a special occasion visit one of the Snowshoe Village's fine dining bistros.

The population of Pocahontas County was recorded as 8,995 in 2004. Residents enjoy keeping up the tradition of thriving friendly communities and small towns in a beautiful rural mountainscape.  People here enjoy a gentler life away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and closer to the nature of the true American mountain heartland.
