Hiking and Biking trails

Explore over 800 miles of nature trails leading to spectacular views from mountain peaks, sparkling rivers, and breathtaking waterfalls. The most popular trails include:

Greenbrier river trail One of the most successful conversions from rail to trail and voted one of the top 10 trails in America, this 78 mile trail offers scenery from pasture to woodland for bikers, hikers, and birdwatchers to enjoy.

West Fork Trail The gentle grade of this crushed limestone trail make it a popular destination for family camping trips in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter. The arrival of Spring is marked with fields of beautiful wildflowers and the colorful autumn leaves make the West Fork Trail a favorite for nature enthusiasts.

Allegheny trail Stretching from the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border to Peters Mountain in Monroe County this 330 mile trail is perfect for long distance hikers. One of the first long distance trails in West Virginia, it passes through Durbin, The National Radio Asrtonomy Observatory in Green Bank, the town of Cass, Seneca Sate Forest, and a section of Watoga State Park.

Cranberry Wilderness Area One of the greatest untouched wilderness regions in the East, the Cranberry Wilderness Area offers over 60 miles of trails through forests, mountains and river beds. Closed to motorized vehicles of any kind, the area is home to many types of wildlife including; American black bear, white tailed deer, snowshoe hare, cottontail rabbit, wild turkey, grouse, both the gray and red fox, and countless birds and snakes.

As well as trail riding, road biking in Pocahontas County is an extremely popular sport and a great way to travel. From mountain scenery, farmlands dotted with red barns, expansive corn fields, 18th century cemetaries, historic churches and fields of wildflowers there is always something to see!

The Road less travelled

Horseback Riding is a fantastic way to enjoy the landcape and a great way to spend a day in Pocahontas County. There are many trail options and several Ranger options.

Almost a mile high in the sky Snowshoe Mountain resort offers year round excitement. There are over 100 miles of marked mountain bike trails. From beginner to the adreneline fueled single-track, it's a biker's pardise. Explore the 11,000 miles of backcountry on one of 50 hiking trails or take a scenic lift ride to enjoy kayaking or canoeing on Shavers Lake. In the winter months the mountain provides the perfect location for endless winter activities from snowmobiling, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, to cross country and downhill skiing.

Motorcycle Touring With so many scenic highways and byways it's no wonder that Pocahontas County is considered one of the ultimate riding destinations in America. On any given day it can be just you (some friends) and the open road, driving through valleys and breathtaking scenery unlike any where else in the country.

Scenic views galore

Golfing at the Pocahontas County Country Club is a nature lover's paradise. With rolling terrain and beautiful landscape the course is a destination for locals and tourists alike.

Pocahontas County has some of the best Bird Watching in the state. The many national forests and wilderness areas offer the perfect place to locate and study a wide range of species. The Neo-tropical birds re-appear in mid spring and many northern birds spend their winters in Pocahontas county.
